I fear the flood gates have been opened on this. Think we may go to the All in Play policy of one change and done, but not sure. Thoughts? Or, there's always the Ebay way and show that icon next to your name when it has changed (yes the icon would be labeled, of course).

hey hey maybe this is where the points could start being used. .. like he has to play a game or few to earn himself so many points and then he can get his name changed. and maybe that could go for anyone else, just to be different. J??

Post 14 by louiano (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Saturday, 02-Oct-2004 19:07:57

bingo! thats a good idea. And, can you decide witch name? he he he. Well or also it could be if you do more than x posts you could earn a name change... but no policies.... well sometimes they are anoying, but well, my idea is with posts but sounds beter points.
cheers

Guys, why not let a user change his or her own name him or herself? Hmmm?
Personally, I don't earn many points because I'm not great at word games. Is there a way that one could use poastings to earn points? On the boards or something?
Thanks,
John

hmmmm JH I personally don't know about the being able to change the name yourself cos things could get really messy (when others want to do profile searches, etc.) there. Also on other member sites, that is hardly an option so really I don't think that sort of thing could be allowed on this one.
When one signs up to be a member to a site like this, one has to be happy with their username unless there is a really valid reason for changes.
:)

There could be a lot of problems with allowing username changes on the fly, such as people impersoating others, avoiding situations, etc. But the points idea is definitely cool. Here's what I'm thinking.
1. YOu need a certain number of points, maybe 5000, to change your name.
2. You can only do this once per a certain number of days, 90, 180, etc.
3. Kinda like Ebay, there would be a username history that anyone could view to see what names you've had before if any.
JH: Points for posting... Hmmm, I just see people posting useless stuff to get points. Thoughts? BTW, once you get to 500, you can change the title under your name on the boards. No one's close yet, but...

Post 18 by louiano (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Wednesday, 24-Nov-2004 11:16:15

well I know I have 316 posts (or more) but is it an option that appears in you account settings, or do you have to send a private message to number 1.
Thanks,
lou

Post 19 by wildebrew (We promised the world we'd tame it, what were we hoping for?) on Wednesday, 24-Nov-2004 11:36:57

admin, good idea, however, one thing I would add. I don't think anyone is allowed to change his/her username to a name someone else has held for at least a year.
So, to illustrate, say someone wanted to use wildebrew, that person could only do so if I hadn't logged on to the zone for at least a year (or preferibly never). That would eliminate the impersonation problem and I also think it's just not good ediquette to use someone else's user name, it's not as if there are limit number of user names out there.
People are already posting just to get to a certain number of posts. I don't think any privelleges should be attached to frequent posters, may be to people who frequently log on instead or something, but just to use the number of times someone posts to give him/her privelleges can lead to a lot of unnecessary/uninteresting posts. Or, possibly, you can define a "post" as a discussion with more than, say, 5 replies (of course the person could post all the replies him/herself but it would make it a lot more difficult to earn points just by posting). :)
Just ideas.
cheers

Post 20 by louiano (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Wednesday, 24-Nov-2004 11:46:49

yeah well sometimes I post but I make sure these posts have a point, not just the letter a or B a bunch of times, or pressing that little button a bunch of times so I spam a post...

Post 21 by Caitlin (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Wednesday, 24-Nov-2004 13:43:14

Yeah I post a lot because I love posting and getting answers, but I think it wouldnt' be fair to get poitns for posts because some peoploe just post rubbish, and that just wouldn't be cool to have spam on the boards. I totally agree with Admin and Widlebrew. It would be kind of cool to be able to change your name like that if you had like 5000 points, and you couldn't change it more than every 180/90 days or so.

Post 22 by Caitlin (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Wednesday, 24-Nov-2004 13:43:41

And also I think it's important that you can't take anyone else's active username, but that was already discussed.

Post 23 by Jage (Zone BBS, a decade of madness) on Thursday, 25-Nov-2004 0:55:36

Hello. I guess I should state this now. While we are currently keeping in play the titles for 500 posts rule, we are going to move it to a premium feature that that option becomes available. We think this is more fairer and will cut down on people just posting to get to 500.

Post 24 by Caitlin (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Thursday, 25-Nov-2004 2:28:28

Yeah I think thsi is a good idea. I for one wasn't really trying to get to 500, I just thought it was interesting how the names changed as you rose, and that was kind of a motive to keep going. But I post 'cause it's cool and fun and worthwhile. But I'm sure not everyoen thinks that way.

HOnestly, there is no way to delete a Nick from TheZone. Let's say you didn't want to have an account on The Zone anymore? Shouldn't there b be an option to delete your account? Then to make things fairere, even after the account deletion, no one could use that same username until at least 30 days after the account was deleeted.

damn. how funny when this is now a feature. damn, this topic is old but funny. ah, the zone 3 years ago. it's come a long way.
